Hours calculator is a free, privacy-first online utility designed to add up work hours, track timesheets, and compute elapsed durations between specific timestamps. Whether you are managing an hourly contract, completing a weekly timesheet, or checking a payroll slip, this calculator streamlines the process of tallying hours and minutes.
Unlike generic calculation tools, our time card calculator is specifically tailored for modern work patterns. It supports multiple entry formats (including standard 12-hour AM/PM clock time, 24-hour military time, and decimal hours), features automatic midnight crossover detection for overnight shifts, and includes built-in break deduction fields to separate active work hours from unpaid rest periods.
Privacy is an essential standard for financial and work-tracking data. Because of this, our work hours calculator runs 100% locally in your browser. None of your logs, hourly rates, break structures, or timesheet calculations are ever uploaded to external databases or stored on a server.
This tool offers three specialized modes to fit your specific workflow:
Ideal for weekly tracking. Enter start times, end times, and break durations for each day. The calculator computes daily net hours and aggregates the total net time, decimal hours, and estimated gross earnings based on your hourly rate.
Best for specific multi-day durations or single shifts. Choose start and end dates along with the corresponding clock times to calculate exact elapsed durations, deduct break periods, and view detailed decimal hours.
Perfect for copy-pasting raw logs. Type or paste durations in various formats (like "8:30", "8.5 hours", "9am - 5:30pm") into the smart text area. The parser automatically extracts the time values, converts them to decimals, and displays the sum.
Calculating elapsed time manually requires converting clock times to a 24-hour scale, subtracting start times from end times, and translating minutes into decimal formats for payroll calculations.
1. Convert to 24-Hour Time
For PM times (except 12:00 PM), add 12 to the hour. For example, 1:30 PM becomes 13:30, and 5:00 PM becomes 17:00.
2. Subtract Start Time from End Time
Subtract the hours and minutes separately. If the start minutes are
greater than the end minutes, borrow 60 minutes from the hours.
Example: 17:00 minus 08:30 -> Borrow 60 minutes from 17 to get
16:60.
16 hours - 8 hours = 8 hours; 60 minutes - 30 minutes = 30 minutes. Total:
8 hours and 30 minutes.
3. Convert Minutes to Decimals
Divide the minutes by 60 to find the decimal equivalent.
Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes / 60)
Example: 30 minutes / 60 = 0.50. So 8 hours and 30 minutes is
8.50 decimal hours.
Use this quick reference lookup table to convert minutes into their standard decimal hours formats for timecards and payroll reporting:

| 20 | 0.33 | 40 | 0.67 | 60 | 1.00 |
Enter the start time and end time for each day, then input any unpaid break duration in minutes. The calculator computes the elapsed time, subtracts the break, and displays the net hours. Repeat this for all workdays to get the weekly total.
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time (for example, starting at 10:00 PM and ending at 6:00 AM the next day), the calculator automatically detects that the shift crossed midnight (+1 day) and computes the duration correctly.
Absolutely! Our "Hours Adder" tab lets you paste a raw list of durations like "8:30 + 7:45 + 5:15" or copy-paste text containing times. The smart parser automatically extracts hours and minutes and adds them up in seconds.
No. To ensure 100% privacy, all calculations are performed entirely in your browser using local JavaScript. Your timesheet details, hourly rates, and estimated earnings never leave your device.
The calculator automatically converts hours and minutes into decimal hours (for example, 40 hours and 30 minutes becomes 40.50 hours). This decimal format is standard for payroll software and billing calculations.
