Unlike a simple sketching canvas, this draw a straight line test tracks high-frequency coordinate changes. By applying least-squares regression modeling, the algorithm breaks down your stroke performance into two distinct mathematical dimensions: path straightness and tilt horizontality.

To compute your performance, the application analyzes your path coordinates. The first metric, straightness, uses linear regression to fit a line $y = ax + b$ using the least-squares method. The algorithm computes the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of perpendicular distances from the drawn coordinates to the fitted line. A higher RMSE denotes lower straightness.
The horizontality metric measures the inclination angle $\theta = \arctan(a)$ of the regression line. Perfect horizontality requires $\theta = 0^\circ$. Any upward or downward tilt is penalized to encourage flat horizontal lines across the canvas coordinates.
We fit a linear regression line through the coordinates of your drawn path using the least-squares method. The straightness score is determined by the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the perpendicular distances between your points and the regression line. A lower average deviation yields a higher percentage.
The horizontality score measures how close your drawn line is to a perfectly flat, horizontal axis. The algorithm calculates the mathematical slope of the regression line and converts it into a tilt angle in degrees. A slope angle of 0 degrees gives a 100% horizontality score, with a penalty applied for any upwards or downwards tilt.
To measure velocity consistency, we divide your drawn path into ten equal distance intervals and interpolate the exact time it took you to complete each interval. We then calculate the standard deviation and coefficient of variation of these segment durations. A perfectly constant speed yields a score of 100%.
The tool is optimized for left-to-right drawing, which aligns with standard usability guidelines. However, if you draw from right to left, the algorithm automatically detects the direction, normalizes the stroke path, and evaluates it fairly without any penalties.
An overall score above 90% is excellent and shows great motor control. Scoring above 95% is extremely difficult, and anything above 98% is practically robotic precision. Drawing a perfectly straight line freehand is a great way to test cursor tracking steadiness.
